Student Posters

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION HAS NOW CLOSED.

The Student Poster Competition has been a long-standing part of OCEANS conferences.
Its purpose is:
  • To foster and promote student involvement in technical conferences and society activities;
  • To provide a forum at technical conferences for students to interact on a one-on-one
     basis with conference attendees;
  • To provide contacts for future employment opportunities.

All full-time undergraduate and postgraduate engineering or science students enrolled in a degree program at an accredited university or engineering school can enter the OCEANS ’10 IEEE Sydney Student Poster Competition.

Based on the submitted abstracts, typically ten to fifteen students will be selected to enter the Student Poster Competition.

These students will be entitled to:
  • Complimentary full conference registration;
  • A contribution may be available towards travel, lodging and incidental expenses;
  • Inclusion of the paper describing the work in the conference proceedings, and in the IEEE
    Xplore digital library.
     †
Not including entry to tutorial sessions. Students may register for tutorial sessions at their own expense.

On Tuesday afternoon, 25 May 2010, each student will present an electronic (Power-Point) version of the poster to fellow students and a judging team. The posters will be judged on the basis of the uniqueness and quality of the presentation, as well as the technical merit of the work. Criteria considered include originality, impact, significance and clarity of presentation.

The judging team will select the top three posters displayed and the authors of these posters will receive monetary prizes, to be presented at the Conference Gala Dinner.

The paper of the winning poster will also be submitted to the IEEE / OES Newsletter editor for publication in the Society Newsletter.

To enter the competition, students must submit a 500-800 word abstract describing the work including:
  • The problems/questions addressed;
  • A summary of the work performed;
  • The results/conclusions of the research.

(Abstract submission is now closed.)

Please note that the Student Poster Submission box must be ticked in order for the submitted abstract to be considered for the OCEANS ’10 IEEE Sydney Student Poster Competition.

Each submitted abstract will be assessed for:
  • The technical merit and originality of the submission;
  • The degree to which it fits the theme subject of the conference;
  • The suitability for poster / pictorial presentation at the conference;

and the best ten to fifteen entries will be selected for inclusion in the OCEANS’10 IEEE Sydney Conference.

The authors of the selected abstracts will be notified and sent a list of further instructions.  They will then need to submit:
  • A brief biographical sketch;
  • An endorsement by their faculty advisor or dean;
  • Verification of full time student status;
  • A paper describing the work covered by their poster.
